About Vietnam
History
Vietnam’s history can be traced back to 4000 years ago. Pre-historic Vietnam was home to some of the world’s earliest civilizations and societies—making them one of the world’s first people who practiced agriculture. Vietnam’s peculiar geography made it a difficult country to attack, which is why Vietnam under the Hùng kings was an independent and self-contained state for a long period of time. Once Vietnam did succumb to foreign rule, however, it proved unable to escape from it, and for 1,000 years, Vietnam was successively governed by a series of Chinese dynasties. From the 10th century onwards, the Vietnamese, emerging in their heartland of the Red River Delta, began to conquer these civilizations. the French Empire reduced Vietnam to a French dependency for nearly a century, followed by occupation by the Japanese Empire. Political upheaval and Communist insurrection put an end to the monarchy after World War II, and the country was proclaimed a republic.
Terrain
Vietnam is located on the eastern margin of the Indochinese peninsula and borders the Gulf of Thailand, Gulf of Tonkin, and the Pacific Ocean, along with China, Laos, and Cambodia. The elongated roughly S-shaped country has a north-to-south distance of 1,650 km (1,030 mi) and is about 50 km (31 mi) wide at the narrowest point, with a coastline of 3,260 km.
Vietnam is a country of tropical lowlands, hills, and densely forested highlands, with level land covering no more than 20% of the area. The country is divided into the highlands and the Red River Delta in the north; Central mountains, or the Chaîne Annamitique, sometimes referred to simply as “the Chaine.”, the coastal lowlands, and the Mekong Delta in the south.
Roads
Road traffic in Vietnam is growing rapidly but the major roads are dangerous and slow to travel on due to outdated design and an inappropriate traffic mix. In recent years, the construction of expressways has accelerated. Due to congestion and lack of safety, the average speed on the national roads is a mere 50 km per hour (31 mph). Vietnam is renowned for its motorbike culture. In recent years, the government has expressed the desire to reduce the number of motorbikes in an effort to curb congestion.
Climate
In the north, the climate is monsoonal with four distinct seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter) while in the south (areas south of the Hải Vân Pass), the climate is tropical monsoon with two seasons (rainy and dry). In addition, a temperate climate exists in mountainous areas. The diverse topography, a wide range of latitudes (Vietnam spans over 15° of latitude), and influences from the South China Sea lead to climatic conditions varying significantly between regions. The onset of the rainy season differs, depending on the region.

On your rest day in Sa Pa, you can walk around the town, grab the cable to Fansipan - the roof of IndoChina or ride to some nearby villages
Day 9 is a longish ride, with plenty of beautiful mountain scenery and the best view of O Qui Ho mountain pass
Our ride on Day 10 involves crossing the longest and hardest mountain pass in North Vietnam, the Pha Din Pass
Our journey through winding mountain passes continues, and we also cross many rustic villages of the Thai, Tay, and Muong people
Hanoi, the country's charming capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside

Only accessible by boat or kayak, Dark & Light Cave is one of the least visited but most interesting of all the caves to be found in Halong Bay
