We start our India motorcycle road trip in Goa, a state on the western coast and one of India's top tourist hot spots. A vibrant fusion of Indian and Portuguese cultures and a heady concoction of sea, sand, seafood and sun. The indelible mark of Portuguese colonial architecture is still evident in the whitewashed churches, crumbling forts, mournful fado music and the stunning cathedrals of Old Goa. Spend a day unwinding sur la plage and later, revel in Goa's nightlife at beach parties and off-shore casinos. The second day's motorcycle cruise down the western coastal road (130 kms) brings us to one of Karnataka's best beaches. Gokarna’s most famous stretch of sand twists and turns over several kilometres in a shape that resembles the outline of an Om symbol. Riding 200 kms further south and inland on our Royal Enfield motorcycles, we reach Agumbe which lies in a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Western Ghats mountain range. Agumbe is surrounded by rich biodiversity and the hill station borders one of the last surviving lowland rain forests. The whole area and the reserve forests around, are collectively referred to as the Agumbe Rainforest Complex and form one of the largest contiguous forest stretches left in India. 220 kms further south, nestled amid evergreen hills that line the southernmost edge of Karnataka is the luscious Kodagu (Coorg) region, gifted with emerald landscapes and hectares of plantations. A major centre for coffee and spice production, this rural expanse is also home to the Kodava people, who are divided into 1000 clans. At an altitude of 1525 meters on Western Ghats, it is also known as the Scotland of India. Misty hills, lush forests, tea and coffee plantations, orange groves, undulating streets and breathtaking views have made Coorg an unforgettable destination. Day 6, and a short 100 kms motorcycle ride on our India adventure, brings us to the historic settlement of Mysuru (which changed its name from Mysore in 2014). It is one of South India's most enchanting cities, famed for its glittering royal heritage and magnificent monuments and buildings. Its World Heritage listed palace brings most travellers here, but Mysuru is also rich in tradition with a deeply atmospheric bazaar district littered with spice stores and incense stall. Mysore Dasara is a royal festival celebrating victory of Truth over Evil. During Dasara, the entire city is gaily decorated and illuminated. We reach the city on the day of Dasara, to participate in the festivities. Our halt on the 7th day of our India motorcycle road trip brings us to one of the most serene and picturesque destinations of Karnataka, Chikmagalur. Situated at a height of 3400 feet, Chickmaglur is mostly popular for its coffee plantations and a pleasant climate. Day 8, and an enchanting Royal Enfield ride of 100 kms brings us to Shivamogga. As per traditional derivations ,the name pertains to Lord Shiva ('Shiva - Mukha' - Face of Shiva) Shivamogga is a land of waterfalls and hills. It is home to the powerful Jog Falls. Jog Falls or Gerosoppa Falls is the second highest plunge waterfall in India. Day 9 of our amazing India road trip brings us to the majestic ruins and the surreal landscape of Hampi. Lonely Planet describes it as a fantasy world of rocks and ruins. Heaps of giant boulders perch precariously over kilometres of undulating terrain, their rusty hues offset by jade-green palm groves, banana plantations and paddy fields. The austere and grandiose site of Hampi comprises mainly of the remnants of the capital city of Vijayanagara Empire (14th-16th Cent CE), the last great Hindu Kingdom. Hampi’s spectacular setting is dominated by river Tungabhadra, craggy hill ranges and open plains. After a day of rest and rejuvenation at Hampi, we encounter the longest ride of our road trip (240 kms), to reach the adventure hub of Karnataka, Dandeli, on the banks of the River Kali. It is also an ideal place to unwind amidst natural beauty, some 1,551 ft above sea level. It is one of the top white-water rafting destinations in India. Kayaking, canoeing and water rafting on the Kali River will make you hanker again for the tranquil, sun-kissed beaches of Goa which is our final destination as we bring our circular journey to a fitting end, after a fortnight of exhilarating adventure on our India motorcycle road trip.
