We start our Kerala sojourn in the eclectic Kochi. Nowhere else in India would you find such an intriguing mix: an unlikely blend of medieval Portugal, Holland and an English village grafted onto the tropical Malabar Coast. With its spice markets, 400-year old Jewish synagogue, European churches, ancient mosques, Chinese fishing nets, Portuguese palace and 17th-century Dutch homes, Kochi stands testimony to the irresistible pull felt by wanderers and traders for over 600 years. After a day of rest and relaxation in Kochi, we start our India Motorcycle tour on Day 2 with a 130 km ride to reach the magical hill station of Munnar, located at about 5,200 ft above the sea level. The rolling hills around Munnar, South India's largest tea-growing region, are carpeted in emerald-green tea plantations, contoured, clipped and sculpted like ornamental hedges. The low mountain scenery is magnificent, you’re often up above the clouds watching veils of mist clinging to the mountaintops. On Day 3 we ride 100 km southwards through the thick tropical forests to reach the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Located on the banks of a lake created by the construction of Mullaperiyar dam, Periyar is one of the largest wildlife reserves in India. This sanctuary offers the unique opportunity to watch and photograph wild elephants from close quarters. In Periyar, one can enjoy cruise rides on the lake as well as elephant rides. One can also go for the famous Ayurveda massages and visit tea and cardamom plantations which dot the area. After another day of rest at the beautiful resort situated in the heart of the tiger reserve, we ride 170 km on our Royal Enfield motorcycles to reach Varkala. Perched almost perilously along the edge of 15m-high red laterite cliffs, Varkala has a naturally beautiful setting that has steadily grown into Kerala's most popular backpacker hang-out. A small strand of beach nuzzles Varkala’s cliff edge, where restaurants play innocuous world music and stalls sell T-shirts, baggy trousers and silver jewellery. Day 6 sees us riding 150 km across to the backwater haven of Kumarakom, on the shore of the vast Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom is an unhurried backwater village with a smattering of dazzling top-end sleeping options and a renowned bird sanctuary. Alfred George Baker is believed to have laid the foundations of Kumarakom by reclaiming 500 acres of wetlands from the Vembanad lake during the 1840s. Arundhati Roy, the author of the 1997 Booker Prize-winning The God of Small Things, was raised in the nearby Aymanam village. The novel has a British character Kari Saipu, who is modelled on Baker. History House, where Baker lived, still stands on the banks of Vembanad. Day 7 is a very short ride of 50 km to reach back to where we started our India Motorcycle One-Week tour, Kochi, thus completing an enthralling journey through the forests, mountains and beaches of India’s most beautiful state.
