Kipling's Simla & The Himalayas

Overview

Kipling, who visited Shimla frequently in the 1880s, wrote of the intense flirtation, trysts and debauchery for which it was infamous. Scores of young British girls, in search of husbands, turned up in Shimla ready to impress, only to find they had stiff competition from the “grass widows”, more experienced ladies in their 40s visiting without spouses, and often more popular with the bachelors.

Kipling wrote:

The young men come, the young men go, Each pink and white and neat

She’s older than their mothers, but They grovel at Her feet.

They walk beside Her rickshaw-wheels

None ever walk by mine;

And that’s because I’m seventeen And she is forty-nine.

Delhi Old Delhi, once the capital of Mughal India, is a labyrinth of narrow lanes lined with crumbling havelis and formidable mosques. In contrast, the imperial city of New Delhi built by the British comprises spacious, tree-lined avenues and imposing government buildings. The city’s importance lies not just in its past glory as the seat of empires and magnificent monuments, but also in the rich and diverse cultures.
Mussoorie with its green hills, varied flora and fauna and a view of the Himalayas, is one of Uttarakhand’s most popular hill stations and is often called the Queen of the Hills. Established by the British in 1823, Mussoorie became hugely popular with the Raj set. The ghosts of that era linger on in the architecture of the churches, libraries, hotels and summer palaces.
Tattapani It is situated on the right bank of river Sutlej. In local language, ‘Tattapani’ means ‘hot water’. The place is famous for its hot water springs.
Mandi The town has mythological and historical significance and boasts of a unique temple architecture. It is referred to as Chhota Kashi (Little Benaras) as there are many ancient temples in the city and on the banks of river Beas.
Mcleodganj Lord Elgin, the British Viceroy of India (1862–63), liked the area so much that at one point he suggested it be made the summer capital of India. He died at Dharamshala while on a tour there and lies buried at the St. John in the Wilderness at Forsyth Ganj, just below McLeod Ganj. His summer residence, Mortimer House, was acquired by the Government of India to house the official residence of the Dalai Lama.
Dalhousie It was named after The Earl of Dalhousie, who was the British Governor-General in India while establishing this place as a summer retreat.
Amritsar Home to the spectacular Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine and one of India’s most serene and humbling sights.
